Assistive Technology Assistant
The Disability Support Services Office assists students with documented disabilities to explore and acquire skills, strategies, and tools to use in accessing their courses. There are many possible accommodations, however, the following is a sample of those most commonly used.
Testing Accommodations
Testing accommodations must be approved through Disability Support Services prior to the test date. There are three types of testing accommodations:
- Extended testing time
- Reduced distraction environment
- Assisted testing
Note Taking Services
Note taking services are provided to students whose disability affects independent note taking in the classroom. Note taking is primarily provided on a volunteer basis by student peers. Note takers are offered a small stipend if they choose, at the end of the semester.
Alternative Text Formats
We can help you acquire textbooks in alternative formats, such as e-text, or Braille if your documented disability requires this accommodation. Students must purchase a copy of the text and sign a copyright notification when requesting alternate format texts. Disability Support Services will make every effort to deliver alternate texts in a timely manner (there are some formats or books which will take longer than others to obtain). We encourage students with disabilities to purchase textbooks as soon as possible after registering and to submit their receipts and requests to our office. We cannot guarantee delivery of alternate formats for the beginning of a semester if requests are not made well in advance.
Interpreting Services
Interpreters are provided for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students for both classes and on-campus activities (club meetings, advisory appointments, tutoring, etc.). In general, at least three days advance notice is required in order to schedule an interpreter.
Assistive Technology
Our Assistive Technology Labs are computerized learning centers with specialized software and hardware. The specific hardware and software available varies by campus and all equipment may not be available at each campus. Below is just some of the assistance we can provide. Please contact your campus Disability Support Services Office to learn more.
