Types of Prior Learning Assessment

In this Section

There are many ways to earn credit for Prior Learning. Take an exam, present a portfolio or get credit for your military or work experience.

Your first step is always to talk to your academic advisor who will assist you in identifying courses to apply for college credit, and help you avoid unnecessary credits. PLA is awarded for a specific class and is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Below are the options for earning PLA credit.

Demonstrate What You Already Know

CLEP & DSST Exams

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) are credit-by-examination programs that allow you to earn credit for college courses by taking and passing exams in various subjects’ areas.

CLEP and DSST credits are accepted as part of a degree - with or without designation - at participating colleges in Colorado, including FRCC. Credit is not awarded if the student has completed equivalent coursework. We recommend talking with an advisor prior to taking CLEP or DSST exams.

FRCC Challenge Exam

FRCC challenge exams are developed and evaluated by college faculty. The exam demonstrates your understanding of the competencies and outcomes of the course. The format of the exam is at the discretion of the faculty and may be written, oral, demonstration, or a combination of all three.

Portfolio

A portfolio can be requested to demonstrate that your knowledge is equal to college courses.  Portfolios are evaluated by college faculty and may include a variety of materials including other PLA Credit methods, individual skills demonstrations, and/or narratives documenting learning.

Prior learning submitted in a portfolio must:

  • Be demonstrable.
  • Be at the college level.
  • Be equivalent to a specific college course or courses in the student’s program of study.
