Spanish

Participants will learn workplace conversational skills to better interact with Spanish speaking co-workers, clients and community members. Levels 1-4 described below are designed to build on language skills in the areas of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and listening comprehension.

Level 1

This course is designed to provide students with foundational Spanish language skills to be able to converse with native Spanish speakers on key topics in a work environment. The course covers grammar material, construction industry specific vocabulary, exercises, conversational practice and cultural background information. Company specific forms, policies and issues will be integrated into course topics and discussions where appropriate.

  • Demonstrate limited conversational and reading abilities
  • Demonstrate acceptable workplace situational dialogue, and engage in informal social exchange
  • Demonstrate knowledge and accurate use of context-specific vocabulary
  • Identify key cultural issues that facilitate understanding and communication

Level 2

The purpose of this course is to continue the study of Spanish—to understand and speak it. The course reinforces concepts learned in Level I and covers additional grammar, vocabulary, exercises, conversational practice and cultural background information.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Demonstrate workplace specific conversational and reading abilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge and accurate use of context-specific vocabulary
  • Demonstrate knowledge of cultural issues that facilitate understanding and communication

Level 3

This class continues to build on what students learned in Levels 1 and 2 by offering a review of the previous levels so students are able use that material with more ease during conversations. We build on this base with expanding vocabulary and grammar topics and practicing this in conversational activities and role-playing. Although workplace Spanish is emphasized, students will become comfortable in social settings. At the end of this class students will be able to speak in 3-4 different verb tenses.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Speak Spanish with increased comfort in conversations
  • Become comfortable in social settings
  • Ability to speak in 3-4 different verb tenses

Level 4

This class will bring all the pieces together from previous levels by reviewing and expanding what was covered before—review and expansion are so important in 2nd language learning. A variety of verb tenses are used here in the various short readings and discussions. Students will be familiar with 4-6 verb tenses which will build their confidence to speak. We will practice this through role-playing activities that help students “think on their feet” in Spanish. New grammar topics will also be introduced, helping students understand at an even deeper level. At this level students have a broad vocabulary and have very strong language skills to continue building. They also have resources to continue their language learning long after class has ended.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Become familiar with 4-6 verb tenses
  • Build and refine speaking confidence
  • Learn new grammar topics
  • Increase vocabulary
  • Gain resources to continue learning Spanish after class has ended
